Our Trustees

The Ones That Have Been Entrusted.

There are currently four Trustees of the Foundation – two in the United Kingdom and two in the Caribbean.

Professor E Nigel Harris – Vice-Chancellor

Professor E.Nigel Harris is the Vice Chancellor of The University of the West Indies. A Guyanese by birth, Professor Harris considers himself a Caribbean man and is proud to lead the Caribbean's regional institution. He has a wealth of experience both as an administrator, academician and researcher. He is internationally known for his work as a Rheumatologist. He helped to define a disorder (the Antiphospholipid Syndrome) and to devise a diagnostic test (the anticardiolipin test). His academic achievements and personal qualities have earned Professor Harris national leadership positions in organisations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges, the National Centre for Research Resources (NCCR) and the Association of Academic Health Centres. He has received many Honours and Awards, including the Centennial Award for Contributions to Medicine of the National Medical Association of America in 1995. He graduated magna cum laude from Howard University, with a degree in Chemistry and proceeded on a fellowship to Yale University, where he received a Master of Philosophy degree in Biochemistry. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, completing this within three years and again graduating with honours. He then completed his residency in internal medicine at The University of the West Indies at Mona and was awarded the post-graduate degree, Doctor of Medicine (DM).In 1996 Professor Harris was appointed Dean and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Morehouse School of Medicine where he proved to be an outstanding administrator, well liked by both faculty and students and particularly sensitive to student needs; qualities that contiue to be admired as he leads to four campuses of The University of the West Indies.

Winston Bayley - University Bursar

BAYLEY, Winston Hudson, BS (Barbados Service Star); B.Sc. (Econ), (London-UCWI), F.C.C.A.; Accountant.  Honorary Consul of Barbados in Jamaica.  University Ambassador, Fund-raising and Government Relations -  The University of the West Indies. He was educated at St. Giles Boys’ School; Harrison College; University of the West Indies; London School of Accountancy.  He was a teacher at Vere Technical High School 1963-5; Financial Accountant, Colgate Palmolive 1965-67; Manager, Systems and Procedures and Financial Controller,   Air Jamaica 1967-73; ICD Group Ltd. - Financial Controller, University Stores  Limited 1973-77; Financial Director, Facey Commodity Co. 1979-80; Managing Director, Facey Commodity Co. 1980-90; Vice President, Finance and Administration, I.C.D. Limited 1990-92; Vice President, Operations, Musson (Jamaica) Limited 1992.  He was awarded the Barbados Service Star from the Government of Barbados for outstanding service as Honorary Consul of Barbados in Jamaica 1993; Outstanding Contribution to Association and Regional Private Sector, Caribbean Association of Industry and Commerce (CAIC) 1992; Jamaica Chamber of Commerce 1992 Award to Member as Best Contributor to the Chamber’s work; Most Outstanding Employee 1980, I.C.D. Group; Best Financial Controller, I.C.D. Group 1977


Mrs. Elizabeth Mullings-Smith

Elizabeth Mullings Smith is the Managing Director of Maya Blue Limited, a Development Consultancy. A Commonwealth Scholar, she holds an MSc (Hydrogeology) from the University of Toronto, and has a BSc (Honours) in Applied Geology and Applied Zoology from University of the West Indies, Mona. She also holds a Diploma in Risk management and Communication from University of Surrey, UK. 

Her work focuses on developing sustainable development strategies, implementation and optimisation plans for business and development projects. She engages organisations and development teams in the efficient use of natural and human resources to drive creative, viable business solutions, manage complexity, harness creativity and to deliver viability. She provides senior counsel on investment and operational issues, strategy, stakeholder connectivity, innovation, and value creation.  

Elizabeth has worked with top international engineering firms in the UK and has worked in 27 countries, managing various aspects of civil infrastructure design and implementation. She has worked with many Government bodies in the capacity of environment advisor on special projects, to the Ministry of Defence (UK), Department for International Development (DfID) UK , the Ministry of Environment- Russian Federation, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Government of Kenya and has worked in various sectors including energy (oil, gas and renewable), water, waste and mining. 

Her expertise includes strategy, design review, operational change management and leadership.  She is an active member of FORESIGHT, the UK Govt  advisory group which focuses on 'Future scenario' planning and policy on the application of developments in science and technology. She also provides career advice to young aspiring scientists and engineers both in the UK and the Caribbean and resides in the United Kingdom with her husband and two children.

 

Mrs. Susan Belgrade

Susan Belgrave, distinguished Attorney-at-Law is proud to call herself Barbadian/British. She speaks French and Spanish and holds a BA (Hons.) (Languages: Interpreting and Translation - French and Spanish): Heriot-Watt University: 1981 (Barbados Government Exhibition Scholar) Diploma in International and Comparative Politics, London School of Economics: 1982 MSc (Econ) (International Relations), London School of Economics: 1986 LLB (Hons.): 1988 University of the West Indies (II.i Barbados Bar Association Prize for Top Graduating Student Certificate of the Council of Legal Education (London) (Bar Final Examination) 1989. She was called to the Bar of England and Wales: July 1989. She is a member of Chambers of Grahame Aldous Q.C. where she coordinates the employment team. She  specialises in all aspects of employment law with a particular emphasis on  discrimination.  She is instructed by the Equality and Human Rights Commission having previously been a member of the approved panel of counsel for the Equal Opportunities Commission, the Commission for Racial Equality and the Disability Rights Commission. She is regularly instructed by local authorities and public sector employers and trade union firms. She also practices in the field of public law and judicial review including local government work and procurement. She also worked as a Foreign Service Officer II (Second Secretary), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Barbados. Susan also finds time to be a volunteer teacher for Dayspring Learning Centre which provides Saturday school for Afro-Caribbean children where she teaches English and French to children 7 – 10 years of age.
